ERS Publishes Deep Energy Savings Article in WE Magazine

February 27, 2013

ERS's Stephen Achilles and Mike Rovito along with NEEA's Phill Guay recently published an article titled Deep Energy Savings in Commercial Buildings in Western Energy Institute's publication, WE. The authors provide a practical working definition of "deep energy savings" and describe the barriers to achieving it. They also examine several actual deep energy savings projects and consider the possibility of leveraging the value-added appeal of energy efficient buildings to transform the existing building market. Here's an excerpt:

Taking on the challenge of achieving deep energy savings is a critical next step to achieve the growing goals for energy efficiency being placed upon utilities. The deep saving projects that have been completed are characterized by both measurable savings and by comfort improvements that will provide owners an opportunity to realize a greater rate of return on their buildings. ERS Presents at AESP

January 23, 2013

ERS Senior Consultant Mike Rovito will be presenting his paper, Advanced Thermostats: What They Offer the Commercial and Industrial Sectors on January 31 at the AESP conference in Orlando, FL. The complete paper will be available for download on the ERS website following the conference. Here's a preview of what Mike will be discussing:

Advanced thermostats communicate to the Internet, enabling visibility and control of HVAC systems via the web. Communication capabilities create opportunities for energy and demand savings through smarter controls and enhanced HVAC performance management by maintenance staff. Additionally, the advanced thermostats can integrate with and control other energy consuming systems, such as lighting. The combination of these features suggests that advanced thermostats have the potential to fulfill the original savings promised by programmable thermostats, massively increase the available data on HVAC performance, change the relationship between the HVAC unit and maintenance staff, and become the central building block of modular and cheaper energy management systems. Significant knowledge gaps must be addressed before this potential can be fulfilled, particularly regarding the communications architecture that underlies advanced thermostats.
